چکیده

NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) has been using both 70-m and 34-m reflector antennas to communicate with spacecraft at S-band (2.3 GHz) and X-band (8.45 GHz). To improve the quality of telecommunication and to meet future mission requirements, JPL has been developing 34-m Ka-band (32-GHz) beamwaveguide antennas. Presently, antenna pointing operates in either the open-loop mode with blind pointing using navigation predicts or the closed-loop mode with conical scan (conscan). Pointing accuracy under normal conscan operating conditions is in the neighborhood of 5 mdeg. This is acceptable at Sand X-bands, but not enough at Ka-band. Due to the narrow beamwidth at Ka-band, it is important to improve pointing accuracy significantly (∼2 mdeg). Monopulse antenna tracking is one scheme being developed to meet the stringent pointing-accuracy requirement at Ka-band. Other advantages of monopulse tracking include low sensitivity to signal amplitude fluctuations as well as single-pulse processing for acquisition and tracking. This article presents system modeling, signal processing, simulation, and implementation of Ka-band monopulse tracking feed for antennas in NASA/DSN ground stations.

Design and Performance of the Monopulse Pointing System of the DSN 34-Meter Beam-Waveguide Antennas

This article describes the design, analysis, and performance prediction of a monopulse pointing system in a 34-m beam-waveguide antenna of the Deep Space Network (DSN). While the basic concept of monopulse pointing is not new, its application in the DSN is novel in two ways: first, the large antenna structure made necessary by the extremely weak signal environment; and second, the use of the si...

Command Preprocessor for the Beam-Waveguide Antennas

The high-gain linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controllers, designed for 32-GHz (Ka-band) monopulse tracking, have small tracking errors and are resistant to wind disturbances. However, during antenna slewing, they induce limit cycling caused by the violation of the antenna rate and acceleration limits. This problem can be avoided by the introduction of a command that does not exceed the limits....

Effects of Resonance-Based Phase Shifters on Ka-Band Phased Array Antenna Performance for Satellite Communications

Phase shifters are the key components of phased array systems which provide a low-profile solution for Ka-band satellite communications. In the transmitting mode, it is crucial for the phased array antenna system to meet the standard radiation masks, and any imperfections of phase shifters can yield into radiation mask violation. In this paper, we present the analytical approach to model the no...

تحلیل و طراحی تغییر دهنده فاز N - بیتی MEMS توزیع شده در باند Ka

Modern microwave and millimeter wave phased array antennas are attractive because of their ability to steer wave beams in space without physically moving the antenna element. A typical phased array antenna may have several thousand elements fed by a phase shifter for every antenna, which can steer the resulting array beam to different directions. Their low loss, low cost and lightweight phase s...

Typical Ka band Satellite Beacon Receiver Design for Propagation Experimentation

This paper presents the design and simulation of a typical Ka band satellite beacon receiver for propagation experimentation. Using satellite beacon signal as a reference signal in satellite wave propagation study, is one of the most important methods. Satellite beacons are frequently available for pointing large antennas, but such signals can be used for measuring the effect of natural phenome...
